TED Talk | Tim Brown - Week 1

Tim Brown | Tales of Creativity and Play

Tim Brown

In today’s fast - moving, technologically addicted world, where ‘we’ are considered to be the most out-spoken and confident generation that has ever existed. A place where we are bound to shed our inhibitions and share our incredibly - weird but unique ideas… but ‘we’ are sadly, at the highest peak of being bothered by others judgements.

We as adults are so worried about others judging us or our work that we tend to be the most conservative and scared to share our ideas, where as the young children are so carefree and un-ashamed. This fear of being judged is what causes us to be conservative in our thinking.

We as designers, innovators and creators, need to overcome this barrier and expand the wavelength of our thinking process. In order to do so we just need to unconsciously surrender ourselves to experiences. Creating an ambience that is relaxed and most suitable for our workplace is a step forward (some examples are : The Google Office, The Pixar Studios etc.) We need to explore, i.e going for quantity. We need to start building - thinking with our hands. We need to create experiences, maybe through role-play, as acting it out helps us have more empathy for the situations for which we’re designing.

I’d like to conclude by saying that, we need trust to be creative and trust to play - there is a connection, and gaining the skill to move between the 2 modes is what we need to aim for, because you can be a serious adult and at times playful, it’s not an either/or its an ‘and’.
